1. What is a leased line?

A leased line, or private circuit, is a permanently connected and dedicated link that can be used for delivering voice, data and Internet traffic. Each private circuit is leased for a fixed fee, regardless of the duration the line is used.

2. Who uses leased lines?

Leased lines are normally used by businesses that require high quality, 24/7 access to the Internet or other corporate/partner networks or sites.

3. How does leased line connectivity differ from broadband connectivity?

Broadband is asymmetric in that it offers very high download speeds coupled with relatively slower upload speeds. Leased lines are symmetrical in that they offer exactly the same download speeds as they do upload speeds. This means they are more appropriate for organisations involved with sending and large quantities of data or those that require constant data access.

Additionally, broadband services are contended whereas leased lines are not. In simple terms, contention refers to the number of users that might be sharing your link. Leased lines provide a dedicated private circuit for the exclusive use of your business.

4. What speeds are available with a leased line Service?

Typically, leased lines are available in increments from 64Kbps to 155Mbps. Requests for lines over 155Mbps can also be arranged.

5. How long will a leased line service take to install?

It usually takes between 20 and 30 working days from the date of ordering. This can vary slightly depending on which telecom company is used and your distance from the nearest Point of Presence (POP).

6. Which telecom carrier does Evocal use?

Evocal have agreements with most of the major telecom providers in the UK, including BT, BT Wholesale and MCI. This enables us to offer our clients the most appropriate and competitively priced solution based on their specific requirements.

7. Can the leased line service be upgraded?

Leased line services can be upgraded although your organisation will be subject to some additional set-up fees which are dependent on the size of the upgrade. You will then be charged the upgraded annual fee.

8. What equipment is needed to connect to the leased line service?

Leased lines require routers to control the flow of information and provide a secure, high performance connection either to the outside world or between sites.

9. How secure is the leased line service?

A leased line is inherently secure in it's own right because it operates as a point-to-point service. However, if a connection is provided to the Internet additional security services will need to be implemented, such as firewalls.

10. Can I use my existing firewall and/or router and/or switch?

In most cases your existing infrastructure should be sufficient to be attached to the leased line.
