Virtual private networks (VPN)
Overview
A virtual private network (VPN) is a way to use a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organisation's network.
A virtual private network can be contrasted with an expensive system of owned or leased lines that can only be used by one organisation. The goal of a VPN is to provide the organisation with the same capabilities, but at a much lower cost.
VPNs usually consist of an encrypted tunnel of some kind, although they can take several forms, using different combinations of hardware and software technologies. They can exist between an individual machine and a private network, or a remote local area network (LAN) and a private network.
How it works
VPNs work by sending data securely using a range of different technologies, security procedures and tunnelling protocols. In effect, the protocols, by encrypting data at the sending end and decrypting it at the receiving end, send the data through a "tunnel" that cannot be "entered" by data that is not properly encrypted. An additional level of security involves encrypting not only the data, but also the originating and receiving network addresses.
How your business can benefit
- Creates a secure communications link between remote workers and corporate systems
- Reduces the cost of secure communications between different sites
- Exploits the Internet rather than more costly leased lines
- Provides connectivity for almost any location in the world and without incurring long-distance charges
- Increases SME's flexibility to switch to a different provider, increase bandwidth, or add more offices to the network
Investment requirement
Evocal is able to implement a number of different VPN solutions as dictated by your organisation's communication strategy, objectives and existing hardware investments. The precise nature of your requirements will dictate your organisation's expenditure.
Summary
VPNs provide a secure economical alternative to setting up a private network with expensive leased lines. VPNs are ideal for organisations with many different branches, supply chain partners or remote workers.
